he taps his boots on the floor in childish annoyance, but it then turns into some kind of experimental drumming bullshit. he continues doing it because he's both childish and funny, and looks at the watch strapped on his wrist.
10:43am. the fucking bitch is late.
it was one of those rare days when nathan thank fuck finally got some work from the company. honestly, he wasn't too clued up on the details. magazine? article? some form of writing? he wasn't interested at the least but if he was getting paid then he was all for it. but here the problem lies: he should not be relaxing on a bench, but with no means to contact his manager who is now... thirty minutes late there's clearly little he can do. he refuses to waste another second trying to look thirsty, dialing that bitch's number.
he presses his lips together and pinches the bridge of his nose.

he's not at school when he should, as usual. and as usual, he's misplaced his lighter (the second one this week) when he shouldn't, because with the increasing frequency of times ezra has bought a single bic lighter and nothing else at the corner mart, the cashier probably thinks he's a pyromaniac. or something. fresh cigarette at the ready between his index and middle finger, ezra trudges up to the random dude on bench, expression gloomy. "hey, got a light?" he neither smiles nor makes any effort to endear himself to the stranger. fuck social skills.

he takes off his sunglasses and stands upright, giving the teen a good look up and down. looks exactly like a student, so he smiles. "sure, but have you got one for me?" he can't be bothered rolling up another cig, but he does fish out his silver lighter, a gloomy goodbye gift, but it's the damn best lighter he's ever had. "by the way," he narrows his eyes. "what's your name?"EZRA FLANDRES im a basic bitch

the look-over sets him on the defensive—not exactly paranoia, it's an edginess, an apprehension as if he can't entirely believe the other's small magnanimity. ezra nods in assent, pulls another prepackaged cigarette out of the box in his pocket. they're shittier and more expensive than hand-rolled ones, he knows, but disposable convenience wins out when he only smokes with nothing better to do. handing the blond's share over, he tenses briefly at the question. begrudgingly, the name's expelled out with his next exhale. "ezra." then he places his cig between his lips and waits.

nathan's usually a man of his word, so he takes the cig, edges closer so he can light both of their cigs at the same time. call it laziness, or a sly tactic to shake off the boy's awkwardness, it's anything you want it to be. he inhales like he's been deprived of oxygen, and a train of smoke passes through. he then uses their closeness and pats him on the back with a big grin. "don't be so tense man! we've shared a light and everythin'!" friendship for him really is that simple. he laughs. cheer is something he never lacks. "'m nathan, currently pissed off 'cause my manager's not 'ere. what brings you 'ere, anyway?" he takes another drag. EZRA FLANDRES

it's not the physical proximity that bothers him, but the blond's easy grin, his friendly declarations when they've barely met a minute ago. he makes an effort not to frown, still a little suspicious, and shrugs noncommittally. "i guess." leaning back and slightly away, ezra draws smoke, holds it, breathes out mindlessly. it's hot, but pleasant against the winter air. he does relax, any uneasiness vanishing like vapor. "manager? you're a musician?" he inquires, without much interest. it's hard to be impressed when his sister's plastered on every teen mag out there, when he's witnessed one too many music artists throw bitch fits in the hallway at anl studios. "'m skipping school." another drag. in, out. the repetition soothes.

the cig helps, like it usually does. the whole issue with his manager more or less dissipates in his mind, its edges are dulled down, and his fingers tremble a little. his eyes catch the boy's discomfort. "not gonna lie, that's the first time i've heard a reaction like yours." his smile doesn't leave him. "it's nice." he takes a long drag. in turn, in hearing about ezra skipping classes, nathan doesn't act surprised either. "any plans then? or are you free?" he adds instead. the boy reminds him when he was in high school and admittedly, it's kinda nice. EZRA FLANDRES shit shit shit

what he thinks is, he's obviously got nothing better to do if he's standing around having a smoke with a stranger. practically one, anyways. instead ezra rolls his shoulders, watches the ash fall off the end of his cigarette in little clumps. "as free as can be. and bored." he blows smoke in nathan's direction, considers him anew through the hazy veil. "so is your manager even coming?"

nathan goes for trying to make a big point when he shrugs. "who the fuck cares." he's done his bit, and if she didn't do hers then who was he to linger around? but he yawns, and suddenly he remembers how tired he is. "i wanna go back to bed, but here." he pulls out an old bus ticket from his jacket pocket, fishes out a ball point from his jeans and notes down his number. "call me by next week. i'm planning a little soiree by the beach next thursday, and you should come." he hands the boy the paper, folded in half. "since you seem like such a free fellow. it'll be worth your time. if not, just come for the booze."EZRA FLANDRES u could end it by the next post if want

"'kay." he takes the folded number, shoves it into his pants pocket without so much as a glance over it. maybe he would call, more likely it'd simply slip his mind, never to be found again—like his disappearing lighters. frowning at the thought, ezra stubs out his half-burnt cigarette on the arm of the bench and disposes of it in the neighboring trash can. "thanks for the light." he turns back to nathan and gives a parting nod. it's a somewhat stilted goodbye, but, well, he probably wouldn't see the blond again. "see you around," he concludes anyways.
