nathan cracks his knuckles off stage, smile evident, as he watches the announcer mc invite him into the stage from behind dark shades. it's a must have when he'll be inevitably blinded by strobe lights without them. a big cheer bellows through the club. it's all hype, tense, and so exciting. with that, he nearly jumps on stage, waving to the crowd, and giving the dj a nod and a thumbs up. he's done this format seemingly thousands of times before, but the hype is always there. as cheesy as it sounds, this is why he does music. it's a performance art that elevates him out of reality. as his intro track starts pounding through his eardrums, his whole body nods to the beat, holding the mic to his lips. a face crowd, nothing more nothing less. he stand among the mob with fingers clamped on the edges of his camera. light plays over every shape, every body. his fingers twitch towards the shutter button. wait. he isn't here to photograph just anyone. jonah's lens is for the rapper with the golden hair and heavy eyes. he's announced, music filling the murmur of the crowd. jonah eyes him as he takes the stage, grips the mic. the lights surround him in a halo. an ethereal quality spreads over the man on stage. the camera raises to lock him in its sight. the music forces ripples through his body, and he's high. high without drugs, high without alcohol. high without stopping. he should feel overexposed with the amount of strobe lights piercing through his skin but he sinks himself so deep into some loud overbearing void and his body runs on autopilot, contouring to the beat in an elation he's felt so many times... but has never found anything remotely comparable. nathan is a performer. he's never lived a day for himself. lyrics roll off his tongue strong, merciless and brutal. he pounds at the chest, the air, and even hits one of the fans. ouch. he makes a quick gesture of apology and moves on to his next verse, knowing he doesn't have a stop button, an emergency brake lever. a flurry of movement signifies his finger pushing on the shutter button. the music drowns out the sound of the camera. but he knows the moments are frozen forever, each one within the camera’s memory. so intent on viewfinder, the limited sight of the stage from it, he doesn’t see the hand. it hits the camera, pushes it into his face. he releases a sound of pain. there’s a quick apology from the singer before he moves into his next set of lyrics. jonah doesn’t dwell on his swelling skin. he’ll be fine.
