[attr="class","dust"]five lessons. [break][break] 1. you learned guitar from your dad, getting lessons until you were in your mid-teens. he was in a few bands when he was young and a little bit crazier, and the instrument still fit in his hands like an old friend. soon the strings hummed under your fingertips. you made friends, like people do, and ended up forming a band. your garage was carnegie hall, but not like you'd ever accept a chance to play there -- you didn't want to sell out. [break][break] 2. you learned to drive from your mom, but she wasn't that great of a driver. still, you learned the rules of the road and somehow managed to pass the exam and get a license, embarrassing photo and messy signature and all. suddenly the world opened up, you were free. you could go anywhere, as long as your shitty beater didn't break down. you became a much better mechanic than driver. [break][break] 3. you learned how to get high from your friends, a different substance on the menu each night. smoking weed came easily, and drinking was second nature. but the pills they gave you some times, those were...they were unlike anything else. but you ignored the warning signs; teenagers didn't have drug addictions, they just had a good time. and you were definitely having a good time once the chemicals entered your bloodstream. [break][break] 4. you learned that drugs and guitars went pretty well together when you wrote your first hit. wasn't that the whole point? the artist was a tortured soul who only found solace in a drink, a pill and creativity. but you thought calling yourself an artist was a bit of a stretch. still, someone must have thought you and your garage band were pretty decent, and that someone was wrong way records. it was an independent label but you got signed, you got a deal and you were in the studio in no time. you still kept on with the drugs, though. how else did they expect you to write such great lyrics? [break][break] 5. you learned that drugs and driving didn't go together when you nearly bent your car around a tree late one night. you almost died, and it was in the news, and when they released the list of substances you were on you knew everything would be over. twenty-somethings didn't have drug addictions, they just had a good time. staying at the hospital wasn't a good time. losing an eye wasn't a good time. nearly getting dropped by your label wasn't a good time. you laid low, you kept your record deal but you kept doing drugs. [break][break] you learned a lot in your life but you never really paid attention to the lessons you were taught.
