"let you." isa repeats flatly. if he didn't make it all about virgil, someone else would. isa's devotion isn't all to blame for his bloated ego. maybe he should feel bad that everything is fault, or that he's some sort of scapegoat, but there's a satisfaction in being the instigator, in making a victim of everybody else. he runs a hand through his hair. he mutters something incomprehensible and rapid in french. the flitting thoughts of an early morning, the ones bursting out of mind when daylight hits. in the back of his mind, virgil knows it's not about someone letting him make it about him, he figures it's about him forcing everything to be about it. like a bully forces a kid younger than him to give him lunch money, except not exactly with that power dynamic. it's hard to put into words, into thoughts, virgil supposes, but if it were easy it'd be easily explained too.
he lies back, glances at isa and then stares up at the ceiling. if this were easy, he muses, it'd really be no fun.
