control - the word is starting to lose its meaning; not that words are what matter. split lips and bruiseed backs are a universal language. isa scoffs. all his problems - as if nevada could begin to understand all his problems. this was in part because isa wouldn't divulge them, because what difference would it make. he knows nevada puts up with him for how much he's paid - isa wants nothing more than to be written off as reformed. to take the easy route, that's what isa wants. rather than deal with his demons he'd sooner run away. nevada's unhappy about their meetings, surely that's obvious. what benefit is there in writing isa off as reformed, to release him back into society? his temper is explosive, his fist too quick to leave marks on the flesh. isa averts his eyes - the first place he always looks to is the clock, then he looks at the framed certificates lining the walls, still can't believe that nevada is paid to do this. when he's looked at everything else in the room, he finally fixes his gaze onto nevada. waits for him to speak, provides the bare minimum. really, all isa has to do is show up to the sessions. nevada reports this, nicking away at the black mark. isa is carrying fennel and starting flame - and this is his punishment - the grating days and exhilarating nights. his and virgil's half-furnished apartment for eternity. isa clicks his tongue. "sorry," his tone is careful as if to stay impartial and civil, but they both know respecting nevada is the last thing he cares to do. "but i think we're very different." he switches to english. "to each his own." for all his loathing of it, he's fluent, he's code-switching without a thought past mild disgust. he settles back into french more comfortably.
