emily was born to high spirited, adventurous, young canadian parents who made the stylised streets of lille their new home. at least, that's what her grandparents said. they died young in a car accident, and emily was sent back to canada, her parents' homeland.

her memories of france are hazy, at best, and a false memory, at worst. but she does remember it was both too bright and too dark for her. it is as romantic as the films paint it to be, but it is also boring and dull and the people are strange and difficult. canada is no better, but at least her grandparents are experienced, slow, and stable. she's never quite expressed her gratitude properly, but when they gave her enough money for a keyboard emily literally wept tears of joy. (that counts, right?)

her parents were horror film enthusiasts, and emily has never been any different. her fascination with the neither world, the creepy, the haunted, went straight through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. her music varies, because she hates to stick to set genre brackets, but her style and aesthetic is constant in its extravagance and gothic nature. the purpose of her music was always to 'shock' and to 'create discomfort'. her ride to fame did lie in horror movie soundtracks, after all.

emily, or 'ems', is known to be an odd character from a personal level and a wider level, from her 'beyond artsy' shows and performances to her 'strange' interview answers. it's not a front either, she genuinely is, quite frankly, odd. equipped with an imagination of a five year old, university education in music, capabilities in several instruments and a desire just to be different, it'll be unlikely you'll ever meet anyone as strange and difficult.
