his first, and only, kiss is with a glossy-lipped, precocious girl in middle school. she tells him to meet her behind the staircase, so he does. her hand grips his arm, the touch uncomfortable, unsettling—he doesn't say anything.

then she plants her mouth on his own chapped, bitten lips and his heart races, skips, lodges in his trachea. he feels like he can't breathe, feels dizzy, feels panicked—it's not a good feeling. this is not what he wants. but he's petrified and wordless and says nothing at all.

when she pulls away she looks into his eyes, glassy with fear. then she laughs, in rejection and anger and incomprehension, and shoves him into the wall.
