A heavy lidded gaze stares at the digital display and what’s captured in the LCD screen. The bulky camera clasped in his steady hands holds the dark skinned man in its lens. He adjusts where he stands, snaps a photo and moves again. “Could you move a little more to your left?” ISA KRISTOFF

he is divinity, looking out over the writhing, teeming masses. enraptured. he steps back slightly to grab his water bottle. when he shuts his eyes, the strobes glow behind his lids, paint him blood red and deep sea blue, glinting in sweat. a flash of white. he cocks a brow at the man with the camera. with a grin (wolflike), isa leans down with a shake of his head - the heat in their proximity matches the thick, warm, air. "capture the moment."JONAH STERLING

Lips twitch upward. A finger presses down on a button, capturing that moment—that wolfish grin. “Stay just like that.” A rapid succession of shutter sounds follows as the messy haired boy moves side to side until he looks up from the view finder with a lazy smile. Cogs turn in his mind. He stares until inspiration hits. ISA KRISTOFF

part of him should be used to this - star of virgil's candids, but the bright flash and thick lens here are unnerving. the entire night is one seamless song, but he draws back for a moment to twist the beat into something thick and sluggish. he's looking back out over the crowd, but he feels the rat with the camera still clicking away from the corner of his eyes and isa feels exploited. he twists back to face him, leaning down over the booth, to beckon him closer. white flashes disrupt the neon ambiance, each quick succession of flickered light. he flits from side to side, far and close. the bar itself becomes his evanescent subject with its silhouettes defined in vibrant tones. he's here for the man with the wolf's smile and the eyes that measure like something predatory, and he's back to the stage before the crowd can absorb him, before he becomes a mere pulsing light on the peripheries. a scurrying, unwelcome presence weaving through the swarm of damp bodies he turns out to be. few choice words rise from the din. they fall unheard into the background. what does he care? the pictures are what matter. now he's a deer in the headlights, caught by two glaring beams of imminent danger. someone with better judgement would have kept distance from the lure of a predator. he was red riding hood, falling into the wolf's trap. "did you want another close up?" ISA KRISTOFF

isa remembers why he does this - it's control, it's the plague of egypt under his hand; thick, swarming. he's particularly annoying, but one of the masses, nonetheless. winding the camera's loose strap around a hand, he pulls it from jonah's hands, casual as if he's taking back what's his. his image. it swings dangerously as he lifts it, back into the booth, looking absently out at the crowd as he thinks of what he could do. fingers snatch at air. he isn’t fast enough, strong enough. the camera swings precariously up and away, out of his reach. “please be careful with that.” brows knit together, crinkling the smooth white brow. a soft, lilting voice raises in alarm. more valuable is that camera than the man swinging it around will know. “it’s very expensive. now can i have it back?” ISA KRISTOFF

isa can't even hear him, and he doesn't care enough to read lips in the dark. it's clear what he wants, slung over isa's shoulder now. he turns his attention back to the music, back to the place where he's ascended. he could take out the memory card. he could pass the camera to the crowd. he could break it. ignored. voice drowned out in the blaring sounds. he becomes blended in, indistinguishable without the camera to define him. jonah drops his reaching hand. it’s beyond his reach. little point in pleading for it back. not a sound will reach the man above his music. but he will not abandon hope. where there is a will, there is a way. isn’t that how the expression goes? night deepens, grows darker. yet the crowd is as thick as ever, the noise is as smothering. his shoe sails over the booth, a well-aimed projectile with the camera thief as its target. jonah can almost hear it’s impact as he climbs the barrier, reaches for his camera while the man is distracted. the rat has slithered away, into the grime of the crowd. the camera is sitting by the mixer, like it's a part of his set-up. he's barely paying it any mind anymore. he remembers it again, because it lingers in his memory with anger, pavlov's dog drowning in drool, snarling when the shoe hits him with a slap. pain, he can shake off quick. insult, he refuses to. the crowd seems to still - perhaps they have stopped moving, or perhaps time seems to slow as isa watches the photographer climbing for his camera. isa reaches out to grab at his wrist, to yank him up by his arm. if he wants, he can have his fucking close up. he half-drags the scrambling man over the booth, making a mess of the wires and equipment, over the jagged keys and soundboards and onto the ground.
