tate shakes his head, sheepish. "i—i'll manage," he says feebly, without much conviction. his apprehension's justified—two unsteady steps on ice, completely self-reliant, and he loses his balance, falls backwards like a careening star, arms floundering ineffectually. it looks worse than it is, but the first fall still instills a fear of the next. his hands, flattened on the surface to catch his weight, quickly become painful with cold. tate tries to stand, slips down again, and stays there, peeking shamefully up at jonah. "i...think i need your help."

skeptical, he hovers close. tate looks ready to fall any minute. and he does, faster than jonah anticipates. reaction too slow, he can’t stop him and he hits the ice. “are you all right?” the countenance of tranquility, heavy eyes, smiling lips, breaks with a frown. he kneels, takes tate by the arm before he attempts again and fails to stand. forehead creases smooth, he chuckle. a stubborn streak, how charming. and the embarrassed admission. “i won’t let you fall again.” he resists the urge to take the hand, help him to his feet. “hold on to me. i’ll show you how to stay on your feet.” TATE OWENS

"okay." he tries again. this time tate braces his hands, palms red and raw, on jonah's upper arms and wobbles upright with half his weight shifted to the other man. his stance is still comically knock-kneed, his cheeks are red with embarrassment, from his gracelessness or from physical contact, he can't tell—but at least he doesn't fall again. jonah keeps him on his feet, pulls him closer again when he accidentally drifts backward and away. with time and in increments, tate improves enough that he feels somewhat capable at inching forward without jonah's help, though the white-haired man's hovering presence at his side reassures him that there's no fall to fear. he's smiling unconsciously, the upturn of his lips small but giddy.

confidence growing. unsteady no more. he ventures away from jonah, never too far. jonah's a guardian presence. he's never too far away. the space for confidence to build is given, against his instinct to hold on, to smother him. his improvement gradual, until they skate side by side. jonah indulges in the subtle smile, the simple happiness. hours whip by like miliseconds. it's growing dark, sun sinking. a day well spent. he's overwhelmed with a joy unfamilar. it's bubbling, fizzing like a shaken soda. tate is in his arms, lips pressing against lips, before he even knows what he's doing. the setting sun a romantic background to a kiss unintended.
