hands redden, drinking heat off white ceramic. he waits outside the door he can’t open with full hands. elbow knocks against the wood in place of fists.
“karin, my hands are full. open the door.”

she's sitting folded and curled on her computer chair, staring at the screen with bloodshot eyes, barely reading what's on it. she tilts her head back and yawns, and when she hears a drum at the door, she almost think it might the scuttle of a bug. karin rubs at her eyes. there's only really one person who visits, or even knows where she lives. she sits up and her body aches from being still for too long, her bones crackle like stone. "coming." she pulls open the door, and the smell wafts into her sleepy face like the wind of an angel's wings. "got you." she reaches for the plate excitedly. JONAH STERLING

coming. he waits. the door opens, giving view of the mess inside and his sister. she's disheveled, wearing bruises beneath her eyes. it's expected.
"good to see you too." he makes sure she doesn't forget he's also there. the plate isn't just floating. "careful its hot."
plate passing from hand to hand, jonah invites himself in. boundaries have no place with them. he navigates her apartment easily. plenty of times before he's done it.
"have you been forgetting to eat?"

the state of her apartment should disturb him - it probably does, but nothing he says will convince her to tidy up. not her home, not her life. he's resigned to that much, just as karin is resigned to his interference. "mmhmm." she doesn't seem to really listen, and she keeps the lights off, putting the plate on the kitchen counter and eagerly peeling off the foil, concentrated as a lion tamer. without bothering with utensils, she breaks off a piece of pie - the inside spills and she licks it from her palm. it's hot, it hurts, and she feels it burn down her throat when she swallows. "yeah." she admits. JONAH STERLING

he is at home in the clutter. it reminds him of their childhood, of when he spent time lost in the mess when he was made to wake her. they were expeditions into uncharted territory, danger unknown.
"you'll burn yourself." he is calm, unfazed. utensils laid in front of her, he found them in the drawer. "it's not going anywhere. i can bring more."
he watches her. feral like a stray dog, she shovels her meal barehanded into her mouth. no regards to temperature. if he tries to take it away, he's sure she'd bite. its not surprise. she's neglected to eat, forgotten the food in her fridge, leftovers. they're so alike in many ways.
"you're on lockdown. why?"

mouth full, she stares down at the fork, chews thoughtfully before she picks it up with her greasy fingers. she'd have had to eat eventually, but karin's always distracted from hunger and unconcerned with her wellbeing. "you make this?" she asks between hurried bites heedless of his warning. "nothing to do out there." she replies, waving a hand vaguely in the direction of the door. nothing to do in the real world. (and not that much more to do online). JONAH STERLING

alike they are, but all together different. separate entities in a world where even similarities divid. he stands at the edge of a rift, looking out over at her.
"yes, i made that. there is plenty more."
how little she knew, too absorbed in herself. he knew just as little. siblings. lives spent together from birth, and yet they hardly knew each other. the distance he sees her from is great yet easily closed.
"you should still eat. even if its something quick." silence extends, fills the space his words left. quiet is just as easily filled. "you can come over if your hungry too."

"eat shmeat." she says with a shrug. it isn't that she even gets hungry, or remembers the need to eat, until she's already starting eating. it's not like she'll die. ever since she's been a child, she's always asked herself that - what's the worst that could happen? you won't die. and of course karin knows one day she will, but somehow the inevitable and sudden matter of demise doesn't seem very real to her. that's one thing that makes them very different. "no, i'm okay." she says, polishing the meal off in record time. she crosses the kitchen in the dark to wash her hands, stumbling when she kicks the heavy, overturned salad bowl that's on the floor. "shit."JONAH STERLING

difficult. he rolls his eyes at her stubborn show. but he understand. in a way, he's done the same. meals forgotten, days lost. he knows.
words don't belong. he has no authority to lecture, and she won't listen. so he occupies space in her apartment, small and crowded. a silent presence in her space, watching.
food devoured. she's up, moving. stumbles. an eyebrow lifts up to his fringes.
"the salad bowl?" a question in his tone.

abruptly, karin drops to her knees - glances in the direction of the lightswitch as if she's become so one with her home she could turn it on with a thought. instead, she's scrambling in the dark. "shit." she's getting oil all over the floor, hands and knees, face to the floor as if she's praying. "roaches." she answers, as if it's any explanation. JONAH STERLING
